Mark Dantonio Lets the Hammer Drop on Two Spartan Football Players

Mark Dantonio dismissed two Spartan football players for what is being called a violation of team rules.

 

Here is what Dantonio said tonight, "Roderick Jenrette and Glenn Winston have been dismissed from the football team for violation of team rules." The troubles themselves are disturbing, but the timing couldn’t be worse. Coming after an end of season blow out loss and even more disturbing, after both players were allowed to return this season after previous issues.

 

Mark Dantonio allowed both men to earn the right to return to this team after both previously spent time not part of the active roster for off field issues.

He showed both of them tough love and he was rewarded by what in my opinion is a betrayal of his trust. Had Dantonio kicked both of them out prior he would have been praised for being tough. Instead he was tough but didn’t talk publicly about their further punishments, made them earn it back and when they did, they certainly didn’t reward their coach with ideal behavior.

 

His critics will use this as a chance to attack him, attacking him for being tough and giving kids a second chance in my book isn’t a bad thing. I supported him 100% for allowing both back on the team.

 

It is my opinion that the ones who were wrong are Winston and Jenrette. Not Dantonio. 

 

Both were expected prior to this incident to compete for starting jobs in 2010 and would have received significant playing time. I had a conversation last Thursday, the 19th with Jenrette and had told me that his progress from injury was going great and that he would be ready to play in the bowl. In fact he told me, “I will be back for the bowl.” Sadly those dreams are no longer attainable.
