I walked out of media day for the MSU Spartans disappointed. I must confess that I have felt this way before, but I guess I really felt like it was going to be different.

Â
It is absolutely no secret that this coaching staff and their jobs are on the line. It is also not a secret that I think they will answer the bell and get to the 8 wins that they must have to stay. That said I came into the game not only in my capacity of a sports director on an ABC affiliate but also as a self confessed Spartan fan. I wanted to see the fire from this staff that said “Heck yes, we realize we have to win and win big.” Instead we got more fluff and padding in case it fails. Excuses, excuses, excuses! I am so sick of it. If I hear one more time about the “lack of depth” I am going to puke!

RE:Â LACK OF DEPTH

If you have a lack of depth, you have had four classes to fix it and it is your fault. Do not blame anyone else. If it is true then you have not earned your paychecks. If it is not true, then quit trying to ‘dupe” the Spartan Nation and tell the truth! You came in here claiming how bad Bobby Williams left it on and off the field, but the only success you have tasted is with his kids!

Â
Â
It is especially difficult because I take a beating from the disgruntled Spartan Nation for defending this staff and from UM fans for the same. I threw a great softball to coach Smeland and he threw away a great chance to throw some read meat to the fans. My question was: “when Coach Smith came to MSU he said we would compete for a championship in year three. We obviously didn’t, the offense was there but not the defense. Is your defense (he is the defensive coordinator) a Big Ten Championship defense?” Rather then a hell yes we are going to pick it up, he thought and said: “we are preparing for it.”Â

RE: PREPARING DOESN’T CUT IT

Â
You have no more chances at preparing for anything. You have to be a championship competitive team or your gone! Get it? Is that simple enough? Throw the fans some red meat. If you’re not a championship defense then either you have failed or John L. has in getting you the players.

Â
I realize that you all make good money and I think coaches should, but the fans are getting their butts kicked and getting nothing back. How about you all show some fire for once at yourselves. I am defending you because I believe in you. If I felt that you couldn’t do it, I wouldn’t defend you. How about you follow my lead and come out and be accountable. Your players admit that last year was a joke. They admit that the defense has stunk and they have to pick it up. I don’t care if you are “preparing to be,” be one or it’s over!

I beleive in this team and I am willing to say it. I take the grief and you act as if it is another season and if we don't have a great season, it is o.k. Uncle Ron will have us back. WRONG! Sending seniors out winners is a theme that makes us sick. A 6-6 record and a Motor City Bowl win sends the seniors out winners and should send this staff out as losers. Come on guys. I beleive in you. Now act like in public that you believe in yourselves.
