With a week and a half to go for Michigan State football spring practice, the Spartans are looking ahead.

An important piece of spring football is recruiting. High school players take visits and observe practice, film sessions and get a feel for the fan support and game day environment at the spring game. Michigan State will host their spring game on April 15, and the Spartans have already hosted several visits and scheduled some big-time players.

The Spartans finished with the No. 23 recruiting class in the country in both 2022 and 2023. Last spring and summer, Michigan State hosted more blue chip recruits than ever before and it hopes to repeat that effort in recruiting this year. With two four-star cornerbacks already committed to their 2024 class, the Spartans look to build some momentum and gain more verbal pledges in the weeks to come.

Michigan State has already hosted some key recruits this spring. In-state rising star Andrew Dennis, an offensive lineman out of Mount Pleasant, and Baltimore (Mary.) Charles Herbert Flowers High School offensive lineman Mike Williams each took a visit recently. Both are considered three-star recruits, but are rising in the rankings. Landing Dennis would be huge for Michigan State’s in-state recruiting, and Williams has all the measurables to be a big-time player.

The Spartans are also looking at some top prospects on the West Coast. During the spring game, Michigan State will host Yelm (Wash.) High School linebacker Brayden Platt and Downey (Calif.) Warren wide receiver Jordan Ross. Platt is ranked No. 91 overall, while Ross comes in at No. 157 in the Top 247 rankings by 247Sports. These are two players who have offers from all over the country and have shown interest in learning more about the Spartans’ program.

The biggest name who will be returning for another visit is someone familiar if you’ve followed Michigan State recruiting — five-star Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy defensive tackle David Stone. His interest in the Spartans started when pass rush specialist Brandon Jordan joined MSU’s staff. Now Jordan has left for the NFL, and Stone is still interested.

How much has changed in Stone’s recruitment? Do the Spartans have what it takes to land him without Jordan? Those are questions that this latest visit will hopefully answer.

Michigan State won’t get as much talent on campus this year as they did last spring or summer, but they will still have plenty of blue-chip players and may have a better shot at landing the players who do make their way to campus in 2023. Spring visits are when recruits start narrowing down their list of school choices and commitments start to ramp up. That makes the upcoming weeks critical for Spartans football.
