LOOK: Michigan State Breaks Out (Perhaps) My Favorite Uniform Combination Ever

In this story:
If you know me, you know I love a healthy dose of tradition in college athletics. While others have clamored for all kinds of new uniform combinations, I like it when programs stick to their basic color schemes and get creative with those.
That's exactly what Michigan State football is doing this week, as the Spartans hit the road for the first time in a tough matchup against Iowa. On Thursday, MSU Football's social media accounts revealed the Spartans will wear the all-white, "stormtrooper" uniform combination against the Hawkeyes.
But, there's a twist — Michigan State is also breaking out a green "Block S" helmet logo for the first time in program history.

While its a modern development, I still considered the "all-whites” a classic look for the Spartans. It's also not a gimmick — White is one of Michigan State's primary school colors.
The stormtrooper look has always been my favorite of MSU's uniform combinations, probably due to my love for Star Wars (George Lucas' Star Wars that is, not this new Disney crap). On top of that, the "Block S" may lowkey be my favorite helmet logo for the Spartans as well. I’m a big fan of “Gruff Sparty" as well, but there's something about the "Block S" that just looks and feels right on the helmet.

As you can probably tell from the way I've waxed poetic about this combo, not to mention the headline of this article, I love this look for Michigan State. Even better, I think it'll really stand out against Iowa's black and yellow home uniforms, especially at night in Kinnick Stadium.
This was the perfect week for the Spartans to break out this look.
The history of the “Block S” helmet logo goes all the way back to the 1934 season, where a smaller version was centered on the winged helmets that Charlie Bachman’s teams wore at the time until 1946.
The logo, as MSU fans have come to recognize it, was reintroduced to the helmet by George Perles in 1983 on the right side of the Spartans’ helmets, where it remained until 1994. Michigan State then brought back the “Block S” on both sides of the helmet for the 2001 and 2002 seasons under Bobby Williams.
The “Block S” did not make its return to MSU’s helmets until very recently, when it was worn on the right side only in honor of Perles in one game in each of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons. However, in each of the instances mentioned above, the “Block S” was always a white logo on a green helmet. On Saturday, against Iowa, it will be a green logo on a white helmet for the first time in program history.
