Michigan State’s Dynamic Duo: Jerel Worthy and Anthony Rashad White Are Ready to Rumble!

There have been a number of dynamic duos over the years, Batman and Robin, Sonny and Cher, Jordan and Pippen, Hall and Oates. You get the idea. The MSU defense appears to have one of their own. Before the 2011 season ends, I expect Worthy and White’s names to be discussed by many a Big Ten fan. These guys have the capability to wreak havoc on a lot of offenses.

Worthy is no stranger to notoriety having been named all Big Ten last season and a freshman All American the season before that. Anthony Rashad White on the other hand was largely an unknown a year ago, not yet a part of the MSU program. Both of these guys check in north of 300 pounds. They have that traditional NFL defensive tackle build… broad shoulders, legs like a Red Oak and some lead in their keesters. Both have a chance to play in the NFL someday.

Jerel Worthy is already a star. Scouts have spoken with us a number of times regarding Worthy and his potential and it is clear that he is becoming a star. Nothing will make Worthy more effective than someone next to him that commands attention as well. Anthony Rashad White can be that guy this year. More double-teams for Worthy means more sacks for other lineman and linebackers. White will find himself on the end of quite a few double-teams before 2011 is over as well.

We spoke to MSU’s dynamic duo about the defensive line; Worthy had this to say. “We want to get to the point where our defensive line is in control of the game. We want to get sacks. We want get TFL’s (tackles for loss)… allow our backend to concentrate on the backend.”

White spoke humbly about his MSU spring. “I just need to keep working and leaning the system.” By all accounts, White has been having an excellent spring and should get a lot of snaps this year alongside of Worthy.

MSU was overmatched almost everywhere on the field against Alabama. The lack of talent in the trenches was exposed on New Year’s Day. Mark Dantonio has put a premium on power and athleticism up front; Worthy and White fit the mold. If MSU is to compete with the upper echelon, big athletes like Worthy and White must become the staple. Every year that this staff has been in East Lansing, they have made a push to bring in better talent upfront.

Worthy shared with us his thoughts about the Alabama game. “I think its growth. Being out there with Alabama (forces) you to grow up faster. When you play against guys that are playing for a national championship every year, like Mark Ingram, you got to grow up fast.”

MSU football needs their dynamic duo to step up and dominate this year. MSU’s defensive line has an opportunity to be among the best in the Big Ten. Much of that will start with Worthy and White. The two of them are a couple big games away from becoming Big Ten household names.

The Spartan defense has to get sacks this year without having to blitz. The defensive line is making that a priority. With RB Edwin “ROCK” Baker saying he wants 2,100 yards and 20 TDs this season, the never quiet Worthy declared he wants, “Ten sacks!”

I like the sound of that. If an MSU Rose Bowl is in the cards after the 2011 season, than White and Worthy have to anchor and own the line of scrimmage.
