Mel Tucker Strategically Master Minded at Michigan State

Mel Tucker's decision to keep Harlon Barnett, Mike Tressel, and Ron Burton on staff strategically masterminded for Michigan State football.

East Lansing, Mich—Mel Tucker's decision to retain Mike Tressel and Ron Burton and bring back Harlon Barnett was not just about them being great coaches. It was strategic with the late retirement by Mark Dantonio to help the rest of his new staff by having good coaches who knew the roster.

 

Barnett, Tressel, and Burton are skilled at evaluating talent, and even though the coach on the defensive side of the ball, they knew the offensive roster top to bottom having played against them when they were on the scout team. Barnett addressed what the three bring to Michigan State football.  

 

"Myself, Mike (Tressel) and Ron (Burton) as well, and I'll still speak up on the guys that I still know about and have either coached or recruited. They rely on all three of us quite a bit, especially when we're having our defensive meetings, and we're talking about guys what they are and who they are. Even at that, though, looking at it from the other side of Coach Hazelton and Coach Els and the guys that haven't been here, you still want to see for yourself. That's something that they're going to, they listen to us and what we're saying about kids, watch the film, but they still want to be able to learn for themselves as well."
