Notes from Spartan Football

 

1. Mike Bacon is still the starting LG, but Joel Foreman is pushing him, according to OL Coach Dan Roushar today. Other than the LG spot, the other four (also according to Roushar are solid. LT: Cironi C: Nitchman RG: Martin RT: Miller
2. Ashton Leggett struggled all spring holding on to the ball. In fact he fumble four times in one scrimmage. The good news is that Leggett said today that his problems in the spring were because he had an injury to one of his arms and had trouble gripping the ball. (Video coming of Leggett talking about this) He has only made one fumble with hundreds of reps this fall and is looking great. He and Anderson are pushing at that #2 spot.
3. Kirk Cousins has gotten the attention of his teammates. He looks very good and his passes are very crisp and his leadership skills are very evident. This is clearly Hoyer’s team, but your #2 QB needs to posses the skills he is showing off and it certainly is his chance to shine for next year’s battle with Keith Nichol.
4.  Big props to Mark Dantonio’s right hand man Brad Lunsford. He redeemed himself for some of the pitiful and to be honest embarrassing music that he has on his IPOD. He is now rocking it with old school class and I am glad to have him back on my friends list! J
5. Antonio Jeremiah is still over his #319 demanded weight. Coach Gill said today that he is in the #320’s.
6. Coach Roushar’s style is a little different from Dantonio’s and that is not in any way being controversial. Dantonio takes the Jim Tressel philosophy that you play a lot of players so you never are stuck with total inexperience. I asked him if he agreed and how big his rotation would be and he said he prefers to play the same five. Now again I reiterate that this is not a controversy. Another great attribute that Dantonio gained working for Tressel is that he allows his coaches to coach. I have a feeling that barring injury they may go seven deep, but they don’t want to see it go bigger than that.
7. Coach Gill informed us that he would like to run a 5 DT rotation and a 4 DE rotation. He said that Ishmyl Johnson is learning the system and is out of that rotation right now (if there was a game tomorrow) but that they would like him to move into it.
8. DT Kevin Pickelman has turned heads and is playing very well in camp. Coach Gill sees that young man in the rotation and watching him on the field should be very interesting this season.
9. Game planning for Cal is underway, but it won’t take over the consuming thought process until Saturday night after the scrimmage. I do know for a fact that key players that are not battling for positions (I said key players) already have advance looks and are studying hard.

I will have an article up later today or early in the morning addressing the off the field issues with three players. Don’t formulate an opinion until you read this.
