Spartan Nation 2005 Pre-Season Top 25

  1. USC The two time defending champions stay on top until someone can stop them! I think Cal will, and I don’t think they will three-peat!
  2. Ohio State Loaded with talent, this Buck team could end up in the big game. An early date with #3 Texas will be a huge test at the ‘shoe!
  3. Texas Mack Brown showed us a lot in last years Rose Bowl. Now he needs to go into Columbus and win as well as the red river battle with arch-nemesis Bob Stoops to show that he knows what to do with all that talent.
  4. Virginia Tech Frank Beamer has his boys ready for a big 2005 campaign.
  5. LSU I am not comfortable in this position with a new coach rated so high, however, he is also one of America’s great young coaches and he is totally loaded with talent. I think they will be in the national championship hunt.
  6. Iowa The Hawks are loaded with one of America’s best coaches. I have them slated for only one defeat and that is 9/24 against #2 OSU!
  7. Florida I am not comfortable with putting a team with a new coach and system this high, however, it is Urban Meyer and he inherited a talent rich team.
  8. Florida State Plagued by injury and problems, this team has the talent but may spin out of control!
  9. Miami The Canes are dangerous and although I don’t see them as a contender for the big prize this year, they have some young studs that if they grow up fast, can put them in the race.
  10. Tennessee Yes the Vols have a national championship under Coach Fulmer but they have grossly under-performed as of late and the orange country is not happy. They will respond this season.
  11. Oklahoma They have immense talent but it is young. If a young QB and WR core can step up then once again we could see them in the big game.
  12. Georgia Coach Richt is one of the great young guys and the folks in Athens need to enjoy him as long as Bobby Bowden is at FSU. When Bowden retires he is gone!
  13. Louisville The Cards are a team that has danger signs all over themselves. They could make a lot of noise in 2005.
  14. Texas A.M. I am a great fan of Coach Fran and I think they could be a title contender. A great QB and a great coach lead them but have some holes filled with young guys. If this team matures fast, I have no doubt they could be in the race.
  15. MSU The Spartans are poised for a great season. They have issues with players staying healthy and maturing, but if they can do both, then they can make some real noise. They have an explosive offense it is the defense that has many questions.
  16. Michigan They lost so much talent on defense but still have the second best QB/RB combo in the nation. If the young “D” can step up, then watch out Big Ten. I have predicted them to win the big rivalry game with OSU but losing in East Lansing.
  17. Purdue Tiller is a great coach and his Boilermakers are always ready to play. He consistently gets more from less.
  18. Auburn Huge holes for the Tigers. They lost so much but Coach T will have his boys ready for a war in the SEC!
  19. California Tedford is a brilliant tactician. If they can pull off the upset of SC (and that is not far fetched) then this season could be special.
  20. Texas Tech This team really is special. They are a great blend of talent and keep and eye on the Red Raiders.
  21. Boise State Coach Hawkins is building something special. You have to wonder how long it will be until a bigger school sweeps him off, but as long as he is in Boise, they will be special. He is a special talent with a great situation. MEMO: lose the blue turf, please!
  22. Bowling Green The perennial power from the MAC has a lot of talent and a great QB. They could be this years Utah!
  23. NC State This Wolfpack team is athletic. If you get the chance, take a minute and enjoy these guys!
  24. Penn State Coach Paterno, the greatest coach of all time, is back with an awesome defense.
  25. Minnesota Glen Mason is one of the most under appreciated coaches in America. He has built a program with virtually no tradition (for the third time) and sadly gets no respect in the Twin Cities. This team has a lot of talent but some real big holes. Mason’s teams have lost for talent issues but never coaching. This team is always a danger and be careful not to overlook them.
