Spartan Nation Salutes Captain Max!

There has been no shortage of articles written about Max Bullough since he arrived on MSU’s campus as an early enrollee in 2010. As a freshman, he backed up All-American linebacker Greg Jones and starred on special teams. As a sophomore, Max stepped in for Greg, filled the middle ‘backer position and did it better than his predecessor. This year, Max was taken to Chicago as one of the three team representatives and elected a captain by his peers.

Max commented on his newly elected position of leadership. “I keep saying it over and over again. It is humbling… very humbling (to be picked) from a group of guys you share everything with.  They are your age. They sweat with you, they bleed with you, they cry with you… to be picked out of those guys, who are all great leaders, really means the world to me.”

It was evident from the first day that Max stepped on campus he was destined for a position of leadership on this team. He started leading the moment he arrived. Max is a gifted athlete, but it is easily argued that his cerebral play and leadership are the two attributes that make him so special.

Max is a gym rat and a film junkie. As a result, he knows the defense like another defensive coordinator making adjustments on the field the moment the QB starts his cadence or audibles to another play. Bullough looks every bit like an NFL middle ‘backer checking in somewhere north of 250 pounds. His vocal leadership is hard to ignore, but the example he sets goes way beyond words spoken.

We asked Max about his being elected captain. Here is what he shared with Spartan Nation. “I was just trying to do my part. When I needed to lead, I lead… I
think I did that quite a bit in camp and over the summer. I was just excited for whoever was going to be captain. Now that I was named (a captain), I am appreciative.”

Max Bullough makes his presence felt around the Daugherty Building. His teammates know that he is going to set the standard by which they work.  They know that he’ll be the first one in and the last one to leave.

On Saturdays, Max will impact the game coaching his defense on the sideline during an offensive series.  He’ll make sure everyone is lined up properly when they get on the field. He’ll make the right read at the line of scrimmage and he will always leave everything on the field. Michigan State’s #40 roaming the middle is a
star in the classroom as well which makes the coaches happy and his family proud. Max Bullough is a huge reason MSU’s defense is picked as the best in the B1G.
Congratulations Max!!
