The Spartan staff has a saying when it relates to players. It has to do with “The light coming on” with a guy. They simply mean that somewhere from the end of high school until college graduation for a player to excel at MSU the light has to come on where the revelation of what it takes to play at this level clicks in their head.

 

As the Spartans look for answers on the offensive line this season one player that they would love to see the light come on for is fifth year senior OT Brendon Moss.   The light coming on isn’t a statement of character it is a statement of all the ancillary things that go on: film, off-season conditioning and many other things not directly on the field.

 

Young men who get scholarships to play football can do it when the lights are on. It worked in high school, but at this level there is so much more. Moss came to MSU via Fork Union Military Academy. Moss came to MSU heralded as a high motor player with a mean streak.

 

The Spartan Nation has learned Brendon Moss, since he came to MSU, is a fine young man but this season we are going to see the mean streak and high motor that brought him here. In fact, his high school coach Mike Glennie, from Saline, reflected on one of his favorite pupils recently to me when he said, “I really root for Brendon. He is such a super young man and person and I am really proud of him. This will be a good season for him. They don’t make any finer person than Brendon.”

 

We could talk about why Brendon hasn’t spent a lot of time in this slot, but that was yesterday. What matters is that Moss has all the tools. Moss has the ability. It isn’t like he is a guy who is undersized, slow and doesn’t have strength. He has all of the tools and as camp approaches and his final season nears, heed my warning and DON’T COUNT MOSS OUT!

 

There is a lot of young talent on this team. There are a lot of fine young men. There is also a fine tackle entering his fifth year, a young man that loves the game, a young man whom as he enters the fall of his career looks at the game with a new perspective. Moss understands that his days are now measured in weeks, rather than months and years. He also understands that he has practiced for years and now he covets the opportunity to play.

 

I am not Dan Roushar or Don Treadwell. I can tell you that this season there are a lot of people excited for the season to start, and I can assure you of this. No one is more excited than Moss. I can also tell you that if effort and heart are the only two barometers of who plays this season that Moss’s name is in the hunt.

 

He is ready for this season and he is ready to play. The light is on and this young man is ready to show the Big Ten that he is as good of a football player as he is a young man. Moss didn’t get this far by quitting.  He hasn’t ever given up. A lot of guys would look at a fifth year having never been a full time starter and quit.

 

Quitting wasn’t an option for Moss. That isn’t how he was raised and it isn’t the character of the young man. The light is on and you can search the Spartan Nation far and wide and no one is more excited about camp and two a days than Brendon Moss. Don’t count him out. He hasn’t counted himself out, and when you look back over his career he has had a lot of chances to quit and has always come back. To borrow a term from the Governator “He’s back.” Moss is ready to play and savor his fifth and final season of football.
