The campus was beautiful, the environment awesome and the football? For team USA it was great. The sad part was that no other team was able to compete with the American team’s talent.

 

I spent time in Canton at the Junior World Championships and more importantly team USA and Spartan recruits Chris Norman and Micajah Reynolds. What a day it was watching these two compete with some of the best incoming division one talent in the nation. Here are some of my thoughts and you can watch my interview with the teams head coach Chuck Kyle from Ohio’s St. Ignatius High School. 

 

Coach Kyle is recognized as one of the premiere high school coaches in the nation. This nearly four-week program is incredibly beneficial to Norman and Reynolds as they get a nearly four-week practice head start on the other incoming Spartans and they benefit from some great coaching. Here are my observations:

 

Chris Norman OLB

He will push Brandon Denson, and I expect him to overcome Denson at some point during the season (if not in fall practice) to take the starting job. He was a star among stars. He has the technique, the size and the football IQ to play immediately.

 

Coach Kyle has sent an enormous amount talent onto division one schools and is not one to over-promote players. He told me that Norman was a Sunday player (NFL) and that he expected him to play almost immediately. In fact, after that brief exchange I interviewed him on camera and you can click on the Hondo’s House ICON on the left and hear for yourself what this legendary coach thinks of the new Spartan star.

 

One coach that I met there said, “Norman and Jones (Greg) on the same backer group will rein havoc on the Big Ten.”

 

Micajah Reynolds

As I have said since this big fella from Lansing Sexton committed, he will redshirt in 2009 (ideal for all OL and an almost certainty at MSU) and that isn’t a slam. He has all the size and talent; he is simply raw.

 

He played both on the right and left with equal ease as well as special teams. He will develop strength and his frame is there. He will fill it out with the assistance of Coach Ken Mannie. Caj has all of the tools to be a very good Big Ten lineman and he clearly showed that he belonged in this group. Coach Kyle agreed with my assessment that he is raw and simply needs time to develop.

 

Brian Hoyer

Coach Kyle was the high school coach of former Spartan and current New England Patriot Brian Hoyer and I spoke with him also about Hoyer. You can imagine his pride. Take time now to watch the entire interview with Coach Kyle by clicking on the Hondo’s House ICON on the left.
