If there were a discernable strength in an all around balanced 2009 recruiting class it was along the offensive line. It looks as though MSU will continue to add to their already impressive stable of “Hog Molly’s” and one player they would love to call their own in 2010 is Garret Davis.

 

The Willow Run (MI) product has been on the Spartans radar for some time now and is set to attend junior days all over Big 10 country including Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Purdue while also having offers to camp at Arizona and Minnesota as well.

 

A common thread in Mark Dantonio’s two classes has been versatility, and that is the strength of Davis’s game. While many recruiting publications list him as an offensive guard Davis is actually being recruited to MSU as a Defensive Lineman. It is thought that he would play on the interior at Defensive Tackle, but at this stage in his recruitment that is subject to change.

 

The 6’3” 250-pounder is going to have to add size if he wants to play on the interior of either line at the next level but his strength is not an issue. Davis has checked in at 315 lbs on the bench press and can squat 450 lbs as well.

 

MSU’s entire staff is attacking areas of the state that have traditionally been University of Michigan pipelines and having success doing so. Like WR Donald Spencer of the ’09 class, Davis attends school in Ypsilanti, which is very near Ann Arbor. If MSU could begin to open up a pipeline by landing a player out of UM’s backyard two years in a row it would mean huge things for the program.

 

Davis has yet to receive his first college offer but lists Illinois, Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin and MSU as schools he is interested in. Just because he doesn’t have an offer doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player either. It is still early in the process and the Spartans have only offered roughly 10 prospects thus far, making the lack of a scholarship relatively normal.

 

MSU will continue to check Davis out through these next months and into the crucial summer camp circuit and you can bet that Mark Dantonio’s crew won’t leave a stone unturned.
