Week Three Spartans in the NFL Report
Jerel Worthy starred at defensive end for the Packers in Green Bay’s 23-10 victory over the Bears on Thursday night. The rookie lineman turned in a great performance, racking up three tackles, a sack for four yards, two tackles for loss and a quarterback hit. Worthy was a major part of a Packer defense that kept Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler uncomfortable all night. Cutler did manage one touchdown pass, though -- a twenty-one yard strike to tight end Kellen Davis. The reception was the tenth touchdown of Davis’ career.
Punter Brandon Fields and the Dolphins tasted victory for the first time since the final game of last season, as Miami trounced the Raiders, 35-13. Fields was essential in helping his team win the field position game. He booted six punts for an average of 53.2 yards and pinned Oakland inside its own twenty yard line a total of four times.
Eric Smith of the Jets made his first appearance at safety since injuring his hip and knee in the first week of the preseason. He did not record any stats in New York’s 27-10 loss to the Steelers.
Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins did not play for the Redskins in Washington’s narrow 31-28 defeat at the hands of the Rams. For the second consecutive week, Cousins was listed as the primary backup to Robert Griffin III, in front of veteran Rex Grossman.
Domata Peko played well for the Bengals in the squad’s 34-27 triumph over the Browns. Peko found a way into the backfield multiple times, as evidenced by his stat sheet of one tackle, two assists and a tackle for loss.
Colts’ quarterback Drew Stanton stood and watched from the sidelines as QB Andrew Luck captured his first victory of his NFL career, a last second 23-20 win over the Vikings.
Two 49ers, Trenton Robinson and Garrett Celek, were part of a San Francisco team that handled the Lions, 27-19, on Sunday night football. Though Celek did not see the field, Robinson got a bit of playing time at safety.
Kevin Vickerson looked great at defensive tackle for the Broncos on Monday Night Football, as Denver fell to the Falcons, 27-21. The wily veteran raked in three tackles, an assist and a quarterback hit, drawing praise from ESPN’s color commentator Jon Gruden.
Offensive tackle D.J. Young was added to the Browns’ practice squad on Tuesday, September 11th.
On the Injury Front:
Javon Ringer got quite a scare on September 8th. It was disclosed this week that he missed the opening game of the season with a dangerous arm infection. The running back was hospitalized on the 8th for an infection that caused his arm to swell. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday the 12th. Ringer commented on the incident on Friday: "I was OK until I heard that I could have lost my arm. That kind of let me know that, wow, this is kind of serious." The Titans’ back was out again this week in the team’s embarrassing 38-10 loss to the Chargers.
