Your Spartans in the NFL Report
The offseason is always a busy time in the NFL, and this one was no different. As many teams made moves, a number of Spartans switched teams. A handful of former Michigan State players were also selected during the Draft, and a few were signed after the event, bringing the current number of Spartans in the NFL to 24. You can also keep up on all the player updates here at Spartan Nation, but look for the best online NFL lines.
One former Spartan to change teams over the offseason was Brian Hoyer. Released by the Cardinals in the middle of May, the Browns pounced on the North Olmsted, Ohio native less than a week later. Hoyer’s homecoming excited the Cleveland fan base and solidified the Browns at the quarterback position.
“Being from Cleveland, I know how Cleveland fans are. Whatever I can do to help this team be successful, that’s what I’m looking forward to doing the most,†Hoyer said. “Whatever that role might be, it’s still yet to be determined, I’ll just make sure I go out every day and practice my best, work my hardest to help the team in any way I can,†Hoyer happily told Spartan Nation in May.
Devin Thomas will also get another crack at the NFL, this time with his hometown team: the Detroit Lions. After the Bears released him before the start of 2012 season, Thomas thought he was done with football. When given another chance with the Lions, Thomas jumped at the opportunity.
“Words can’t describe the blessing of coming home to play. Just being able to be with the same team you root for your whole life, [it ’s] a dream come true,†he said. “Every day I really thank the Lord that I’m able to play with the Lions,†Thomas told Hondo S. Carpenter Sr. on Spartan Nation Radio during the offseason.
