Your Weekly Michigan State Athletics General Question and Answer Article

Hondo S. Carpenter

Hondo, I love the column on MSU athletics in general. You said a few weeks ago when asked what coach was on the hot seat that Kathy George, the volleyball coach, would be. Can you elaborate? What has she done wrong? Steve

Steve, she is a great lady. It simply comes down to winning and what MSU needs out of the volleyball program. They want more than just women’s basketball to be the visible female sport. They want and frankly, need volleyball to be that. Cathy is a great lady and I support her. I was just giving a truthful assessment about the situation. They need more out of that program from a win/loss perspective than they have been getting. I want to make it clear that it is nothing personal because I like her a lot. This is a business and it is what it is. She has to win this season.

Hondo, I love the new attention golf is getting since you called in on the new coach. I was interested when I heard the new coach on the radio show and you all talked about Izzo and Dantonio talking to recruits for the lesser sports. Does that happen much? I think that really shows the camaraderie between the programs. Pam

It really does Pam. Football and men’s basketball are the two sports that make money. They are the most visible and get the most notoriety for the school. It is critical for the Olympic sports to capitalize as much as they can on the excitement surrounding them.

Hondo, last week you talked about Izzo and his pay. You alluded to Dantonio and his staff being underpaid compared with Izzo and the amount of money they bring in. I remember reading that they got raises after the 2009 season that really was a stinker so I assumed they got them this year. Do you know how big of raises they got after winning the Big Ten title? Leon

Leon, Roushar got a raise because he got a promotion to OC, but no other coaches got raises. Staten may have got a bump, but I am not sure of that. If you look at the money rolling in under Coach D and his staff and compare it to Izzo, you have to be stunned to realize that Izzo makes nearly double (with his longevity bonus) what Dantonio does. Hollis has his hands tied. He has to balance an administration that takes from him unfairly (please read past articles) and still manages to balance the budget. There is only so much money and there isn’t a lot there. Dantonio knows that times are tough and he isn’t holding the school hostage at all. With that said, it is a slippery slope not to pay certain assistants more. They have it good with Dantonio, but still money is money. Hollis deserves praise for not raising prices this year, but Dantonio and his staff will get awarded financially after this season.

Hondo, I was watching your interview with Hollis and he alluded to at least looking at a new hockey arena. Is that a real possibility and how much would it help hockey? Is Munn that bad? Kyle

Kyle, it is a real possibility. Will it happen this year? No way. In the future? For sure. Munn is an outdated facility that frankly hurts MSU. There is no workout area, the offices are in a cave, and many more other features. Unfortunately, under the past regime it was run into the ground and went from a program that made money to hemorrhaging it.  It is a chicken/egg thing. Do they need Coach Anastos to win a title before they build? No. Do they need him to get the ship heading in the right direction to build excitement for the program again? Without a doubt.
