More Honors for Torey ROCKY Krug
KRUG NAMED CCHA PLAYER OF THE MONTH
East Lansing, Mich. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced on Thursday that junior defenseman Torey Krug has been named the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month for February.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound blueliner scored five goals, including two game-winners, while notching eight assists and blocking 17 shots in February.
With a goal in the final weekend series of the season, Krug finished the CCHA season with 11 goals and 18 assists to share the league scoring title with Notre Dame sophomore forward T.J. Tynan. Krug is the first Michigan State defenseman in school history to win or share the league scoring title and the first blueliner to accomplish the feat since Western Michigan's Wayne Gagne did it in 1986-87. In history, just five defensemen have won their league scoring titles.
Krug earned CCHA Postgame Offensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 6 after recording five points (two goals, three assists) as the Spartans swept Ohio State on Feb. 3-4 in Columbus. The following week, Krug was named CCHA Gladiator Defensive Player of the Week after a split with Michigan. In the rivalry series, Krug scored twice and assisted on the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win on Friday. On Saturday, the junior had an assist as MSU fell in overtime to Michigan, 3-2, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
On Feb. 17-18, Michigan State swept Alaska as Krug notched three assists and blocked seven shots on the weekend. The Spartans traveled to South Bend, Ind. the next week to take on Notre Dame in the final series of the regular season. Following a 2-0 loss on Friday, Krug scored the game-winning goal and added an assist as MSU won, 4-2, to snap an 11-game winless streak against the Irish.
MSU has a bye week during the CCHA first round series, and will play at Miami next weekend in the quarterfinal round.
