Spartan Hockey Adds Mitchell Mattson for 2018-19

Mattson completes the Spartans’ incoming class.

EAST LANSING -- Michigan State hockey head coach Danton Cole announced today (June 1) that Mitchell Mattson (F/Grand Rapids, Minn./Sioux Falls Stampede) has signed to join the Spartans for the 2018-19 season. The addition of Mattson brings the total number of incoming Spartans to seven for this upcoming year as he’ll join Dennis Cesana (D/Providence, R.I./Brooks Bandits), Drew DeRidder (G/Fenton, Mich./USNTDP U-18), Adam Goodsir (F/Okemos, Michigan/Tri-City Storm), Wojciech Stachowiak (F/Gdansk, Poland/Central Illinois Flying Aces) and twins Christian (D/Novi, Michigan/Lincoln Stars) and Cole Krygier (D/Novi, Michigan/Lincoln Stars).

Danton Cole on Mitchell Mattson: “We are excited to have Mitch join Spartan hockey this fall. He finishes up our recruiting class and will add to the size and speed to the team. Good teams are strong down the middle and Mitch will help us be better at the center position. He had a great learning curve in the USHL and will bring that experience and leadership to our group.”

Recorded 21 points (9g, 12a) in 53 games for the Sioux Falls Stampede in his fourth USHL season … Selected in the fifth round (126thoverall) by the Calgary Flames in the 2016 NHL Draft … Had 28 points (12g, 16a) in 55 games for the Bloomington Thunder in 2016-17 … Selected to play in the 2015 CCM All-American Prospects Game … Recorded 46 points, including 29 assists, in 25 games for Grand Rapids (Minn.) High School in 2015-16 before joining the Bloomington Thunder for the team’s final 21 games … Led Grand Rapids High School in goals (22) and points (48) in 2014-15 and later generated seven points (2g, 5a) in 13 games for Bloomington in his first USHL action.
