Spartan Hockey Star Torey Krug one of Ten Hobey Baker Memorial AwardFinalists
East Lansing, Mich. - Junior defenseman Torey Krug (Livonia, Mich.) is one of 10 finalists for the top individual honor in college hockey, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. The Hobey Baker committee announced its list of 10 finalists on Thursday evening, in advance of college hockey's championship weekend.
The Hobey Baker Memorial Award is given annually to honor the top men's collegiate hockey player in the country. It is based on the following criteria: Candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice, must contribute to the integrity of the team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game, and consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportmanship.
"I am incredibly humbled and honored to be mentioned among the prestigious list of players," said Krug. "I have to give all the credit to my teammates, and want to thank them for working so hard day-in and day-out to help me become the player I am today. To our coaches - Coach Anastos, Coach Newton, Coach Miller, Coach Gilmore - their dedication and devotion to our program, and their effort they put into preparing us daily has played such a huge part of the individual and team successes we have had this season. I could not be more proud to be a part of this program, and I am thrilled that I can represent Michigan State in this manner."
Krug is the 16th Spartan to be a Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist. Two MSU players have captured the award: Kip Miller in 1990, and Ryan Miller in 2001.
MSU's Hobey Baker finalists are Ron Scott (1982, 1983), Kelly Miller (1985), Craig Simpson (1985), Mike Donnelly (1986), Bobby Reynolds (1989), Kip Miller (1989, 1990), Bryan Smolinski (1993), Anson Carter (1995), Mike York (1998, 1999), Shawn Horcoff (2000), Ryan Miller (2001, 2002), John-Michael Liles (2003), Jim Slater (2004), and Jeff Lerg (2008).

Krug took home his share of all-conference honors, as he earned First Team All-CCHA and Best Offensive Defenseman honors for the second consecutive season. Krug owns a 12-21-33 scoring line, his best offensive season at MSU and his second consecutive season as the top goal-scoring defenseman in the conference. He ranks seventh overall in the conference in scoring, is eighth in assists, and 19th overall in goals. He tied for third in power-play goals (7) and owns the fourth-most game-winning tallies (3) in the CCHA as well.
Krug plays in excess of 29 minutes per game, and plays in all situations. With his game-winning goal in the final game of the regular season at Notre Dame, Krug shared the CCHA scoring title with Irish forward TJ Tynan. Krug became just the second defenseman in CCHA history - and the fifth overall in the college game - to win his league's scoring title.
