Spartans Win Series against UAF

The Michigan State Hockey team beat the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks 7-4 on Sunday, winning the best-of-three CCHA quarterfinal series 2-1.
With the series win, the MSU team is taking the next step with their post season hopes, heading to the CCHA championship series at the Joe Louis Arena this Friday to play the University of Michigan. This is the twenty-fifth time in twenty-six years that MSU is going to Detroit for their conference playoffs.
MSU Junior Captain Drew Miller once again highlighted another Spartan victory, getting his second career hat trick. The last goal was the game winner.
The game didn’t start out in the Spartans favor, as senior forward Kelly Czuy of UAF scored at 1:10 of the first period. The Spartans tied the game, with just thirty second after the UAF goal. Sophomore forward Chris Mueller scored for MSU at 1:40 of the first period. Later on in the first Mueller assisted Drew Miller on his first goal of the night, as the captain scored at 2:50 of the first period.
Three goals were scored during the second period, two from MSU and one from UAF. Drew Miller scored the last goal of the period at 15:44, ending the second with a 5-2 score.
UAF gave it one last shot in the third period as they came out strong, when sophomore forward Aaron Lee scored for them just 23 seconds into the third period, putting the Nanooks down two, 5-3. The Spartans didn’t want this game or series to get away from them, as senior defensemen Cory Potter scored at 4:43 of the third period, putting the Spartans back up by three with a 6-3 score.
Each team scored again, but in this case it would only help the Spartans as Drew Miller got his third goal of the night ending the game with a 7-4 score and giving MSU a series win.
“Leadership has to take over and Drew did that,†said MSU head coach Rick Comley about his feelings towards Drew Miller. Senior forward David Boot said “Its going to be a great game on Friday, were not satisfied yet.â€
The MSU/U of M game is scheduled to start at 8:05 Friday the 17th, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
