Spartans in the NHL Report for the Week of March 5-11

The Oiler-Spartan trio of Shawn Horcoff, Jeff Petry, and Corey Potter had a great week. Horcoff netted two goals and an assist over the course of the week. He had a goal and an assist on Monday against the Ducks in a 4-2 loss. His goal came 30 seconds into the second period, making the game 1-1, and his 20th assist of the season came with 1:46 left in the third. Horcoff also scored on Thursday, with a goal off of a deflected shot by teammate Corey Potter (who was credited with an assist) in a 5-3 loss to the Canadiens. Fellow Oiler Jeff Petry also contributed this week, assisting on the game-tying goal versus the Sharks in a 3-2 victory. It was his 16th assist of the year.

Though the Maple Leafs had a tough week, defenseman John-Michael Liles did his part. He notched a goal and an assist in a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Bruins on Thursday. He scored early in the second period off of a rebound in front of the net. He added his 19th helper of the season on a Phil Kessel goal that knotted the game at 3. Liles’s performance earned him third star honors.

Left winger David Booth put five shots on net and assisted on the Canucks’ lone goal in Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Canadiens. Booth was credited for an assist on a Ryan Kesler tally in the first. Vancouver went 1-2 on the week.

Justin Abdelkader and Drew Miller each notched a goal for the Red Wings on Saturday, as Detroit lost a 3-2 contest to the Predators. Miller scored first, with a turnaround wrister to tie the game at one. Abdelkader added another late in the game on a wrist shot off of his own rebound as he was falling backwards. Abdelkader missed Friday’s game with the flu. Detroit had a 1-2 record on the week.

The Panthers had an average week, with a 1-1-1 record. Weaver also had a quiet week, with his best performance coming on Friday against the Penguins. Weaver had one hit and two blocked shots as Florida fell to Pittsburgh, 2-1, in a shootout.

Though he could not match his outstanding performance last week, Ryan Miller had a good week in goal, winning twice and losing once. The goaltender had a 2.61 goals against average and a .917 save percentage in three starts. Miller also earned first star honors on Saturday’s 4-3 shootout win over Ottawa. Teammate Corey Tropp scored his second goal of career on Tuesday in a 3-1 triumph over Winnipeg. The tally came during a scrum in front of the net in the second period, when Tropp tipped the puck into the net to tie the game at 1.

Center Jim Slater had a good week, though the Jets struggled. Slater contributed an assist on Friday in a 5-3 loss to the Flames. He also won 67% of his face-offs this week, and has won 65% in the past nine games.
