MSU '21 Commit: Small Town Shakari Denson Making Big Moves
Receiving an offer from Michigan State on Oct. 28, class of 2021 Shakari Denson decided to commit a couple days later on Nov. 1.
“You don’t get a chance like this, no one really knows this town. I feel like this is my chance; do what I need to do to make it.”
Coming from Claxton, a small town in Georgia, Denson is unranked.
“Some people say that Michigan State got another player with no rank; I’m not worried about that. I just go up there and I’m going to surprise and shock everybody.”
Denson isn’t worried. Being able to come from a small town and receive an offer from a Big Ten school says enough.
“I’m glad where I started from. A rank don’t mean nothing, as long as you got heart and you can go out there and show them how you’re made.”
While Denson has a lot of heart in football, he wasn’t always that way.
“My 9th grade year, I didn’t even like football. I didn’t want to play. I was kind of a basketball guy.”
It wasn’t until his 10th grade year where he realized his potential.
“They [Denson’s coaches] told me you have a chance to go to the pros, you have a chance to play on Sundays, you can do it. So, I stuck with it and God gave me the chance to play at Michigan State.”
Not having a specific position, means that Denson is a versatile player on the field. Something Coach Harlon Barnett noticed from his film.
“I’m a good defensive guy. Really, wherever they put me, I’m ready to go. I’m ready to do what I need to do to help the team win; be part of something special.”
In being part of something special, Denson told Spartan Nation how Michigan State’s 2021 commits feel about playing as Spartans.
“We all talked and feel like we’re the best class. We’re next.”
As for Mel Tucker, Denson feels that he will lead the team in the right direction.
“Go green. I’m ready to get to Michigan State.”
