Mississippi State vs. Southeastern Louisiana: Looking Back On The All-Time Series

Looking into the history between Mississippi State and Southeastern Louisiana.

The wait is officially over as Mississippi State football prepares to open up the 2023 season against the visiting Southeastern Louisiana Lions.

While facing an FCS opponent is advantageous for any Power 5 team at the top of the schedule to work out the rough sports and identify areas that need further improvement, the Bulldogs have made clear they are going into this one with the right mindset to not play down to any opponent.

And looking at this particular foe, it will mark the just the second time in history that the two teams have gone up against each other. The Bulldogs won that one with ease, finishing out with a final score of 34-10 back in 2008.

Quarterback Wesley Carroll and running back Anthony Dixon were the standouts in that one as Carroll tossed for 2 touchdowns and Dixon carries the ball for 80 yards with 2 touchdowns, leading the Bulldogs on the ground.

This time around, the quarterback-running back duo to keep an eye on will be Will Rogers and Jo'quavious Marks, both of which will be handling a bit of a different role in new offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay's offense as they transition over from the Air Raid.

Southeastern Louisiana will look to pull an upset and its first victory over an FBS opponent in 29 attempts since football returned to the school back in 2003. If the Bulldogs get the victory over the Southland Conference favorites, it will mark their seventh consecutive win in season openers.

It will be interesting to watch how it all plays out with the Bulldogs largely favored when the action kicks off at 3 p.m. CT in Davis Wade Stadium. The game will be aired on SEC Network.
