Eli Drinkwitz Opens Up About Defensive Line Coaches Al Davis, Kevin Peoples
The No. 20 Missouri Tigers' pass-rush has done a very solid job at sacking opposing quarterbacks this season, as they've notched 19 of them in seven games—sixth-most in the SEC.
As they prepare for Saturday's homecoming game against South Carolina's offensive line, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz spoke about his defensive line coaches, Al Davis (interiors) and Kevin Peoples (edges), during Wednesday's SEC football coaches teleconference.
"Since both of them have been here, not only have we increased our production at those positions in games, but also in our recruiting," Drinkwitz said. "I think those guys have added tremendous value to our program by being consistent in their teaching of fundamentals and getting our guys to play with a lot of effort."
Davis and Peoples will have a challenge against South Carolina, as they must find ways to attack quarterback Spencer Rattler. The 23-year-old currently has the fifth-most passing yards (1,724) in the SEC, and his production often comes from moving around or even outside of the pocket to create time and space.
That being said, Rattler also moves around a lot because the offensive line collapses quickly. The Gamecocks have allowed 25 sacks this season, which is the third-most in the SEC. Davis and Peoples are hoping to take advantage with their defensive line unit, as it's been crucial to Missouri's best start in quite some time.
Johnny Walker Jr. and Darius Robinson, two members of the unit, have logged four sacks apiece this season, which is tied for the fourth-most in the SEC. The two of them also lead the team in tackles for loss with a combined 14.
There are numerous other members of the defensive line unit that have come to the Tigers from the transfer portal. Drinkwitz explained that Davis and Peoples' help with the portal has been extremely beneficial, as they've sent two players to the NFL in the past.
"This year, we've had to develop some guys internally as well as tap into the portal and I think coach Peoples and coach Davis have done an excellent job," Drinkwitz said.
If the defensive line can interrupt Rattler quickly enough to prevent him from scrambling, Missouri's chances of going 7-1 will skyrocket.
