Angeline Named to Mackey Award Watch List

NC State has finally gotten its first representative on a 2020 college football award watch list.
It's senior Cary Angeline, who has been named by the John Mackey Award as a preseason candidate for the honor presented annually to the nation's best tight end.
Angeline had 25 catches for 379 yards and a team-leading five touchdowns as a junior last season.
At 6-foot-7, 250 pounds, Angeline isn't just a big target downfield. The former Southern Cal transfer is also a big play weapon for the Wolfpack.
His six catches of 20-plus yards last season were tied with Iowa State's Charlie Kolar for the second-most nationally by an FBC tight end, one behind Washington's Hunter Bryant.
With State coming off a disappointing 4-8 season in which it ranked near the bottom of the ACC in total offense and scoring, it only makes sense for coach Dave Doeren and new offensive coordinator Tim Beck to find as many ways as possible to take advantage of quarterback Devin Leary's strong arm and Angeline's superior size.
The Wolfpack's Jaylen Samuels was a Mackey Award semifinalist in 2017. George Bryan was a semifinalist in 2010.
Among the other tight ends named to this year's Mackey Award list are Duke's Noah Gray, Wake Forest's Brandon Chapman, Miami's Brevin Jordan, Boston College's Hunter Long and Pittsburgh's Lucas Krull.
