A big salute was made last Saturday and Sunday to the men and women who've proudly served our country.

On Saturday, over 400 Husker fans including retired veterans and some currently serving in the military checked into the event at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel in Lincoln with their families. Hotel rooms were provided for those who needed them. Many former Husker football players were there to relay their experiences as Husker athletes and autograph items. Attendees were then treated to a private tour of Nebraska’s athletic facilities, walking through hallways plastered with Husker greats and to Memorial Stadium.

For a stadium named after all those who serve in our military, it was fitting that they get first-class treatment when touring the facilities and Memorial Stadium. For this day, while the Huskers play away, these patriots filled the stadium with pride.

After the tour the attendees went back to the hotel and watched the Nebraska/Michigan game on giant TV screens. They were served food and drinks at halftime. Many door prizes were distributed throughout the game.

On Sunday, after an invocation by Nebraska football coach Ron Brown, the group was served brunch. Guest speaker former Husker football player and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers entertained the attendees with football clips from his career and inspired them with his message. Retiring board members were honored including Gary McGirr, president and founder of the event and Husker Dan McGlynn, vice president and co-founder.

The Husker Fans Salute the Troops Foundation was organized in 2008. This marks the fifteen year of the event. Our Husker fans who serve in the military at times go overseas and serve for us and really give quite a sacrifice to protect us. This event is a way to give back to them and since they're big Husker fans what better way than let them tour the facilities, get on to the stadium’s field, watch a game, and hear from former Husker greats.

Next year’s 2023 event is planned for October 7th and 8th when the Huskers are at Illinois. A fundraising golf scramble will be held in Ashland, Nebraska on June 23rd

The Husker Fans Salute the Troops Foundation is committed to Salute, Serve, and Support Veterans and active military personnel, to ensure that every person with military ties in Nebraska and surrounding communities feels respected and appreciated for their service and hopeful for the future.
