Monday Notes and Quotes From Nebraska Football Practice

Coordinators speak three days before Huskers’ season opener at Minnesota

There were updates from Nebraska football's defensive and special teams coordinators Monday afternoon before the team hit the practice field.

Coach Tony White said the defensive scheme installation for Thursday night's season opener at Minnesota was essentially complete. “We tweaked stuff. We put in new things, but at a certain point it’s about eliminating problems and letting them play fast,” he said.

White also explained the thinking behind the awarding of Blackshirts. “It was just, hey, the 11 guys we anticipate starting, they’re hanging up in those guys’ lockers and go from there.”

It will be a competitive "week to week deal" with who wears the coveted jerseys, White said. “Right now it’s 11, and then if something changes ... then we’ll talk about it.”

Coach Ed Foley said there would be an announcement Tuesday from head coach Matt Rhule on who the Huskers' starting placekicker will be in Minneapolis. True freshman Tristan Alvano and last year's starter, Timmy Bleekrode, have been vying for the top spot.
