Remember last year when 5-star Husker QB recruit Dylan Raiola was touted as the number one QB and the number one overall high school football player in the '24 recruiting class?

However this year, Raiola dropped in the QB race and slipped from first to the sixth overall national pick.

So what happened and who are the players ranked ahead of him?

I assume the ranking people found other high school players who impressed them more than Raiola did.

Does that mean Dylan didn't have a good senior year?

Nah.

Here are the players who edged Raiola.

Overall Rankings (247 Sports)

#1.) Jeremiah Smith WR (Ohio State commit)

#2.) Williams Newaneri DL (Missouri)

#3.) Ellis Robinson CB (Georgia)

#4.) Cam Coleman WR (Auburn)

#5.) Julian Sayin QB (Ohio State)

#6.) Dylan Raiola QB (Nebraska)

Quarterback Rankings (247 Sports)

#1.) Julian Sayin (Ohio State)

#2.) Dylan Raiola (Nebraska)

So what do these rankings mean? Not much. Husker fans should just be happy Dylan's coming to Nebraska. No one's going to remember how any player was ranked coming out of high school.

Their future performances will determine how good any of these players really are.

The Polynesian Bowl

You might be a Husker fan if you waited up Friday night to watch three future Nebraska players compete in a high school all-star game that was played in Honolulu. (I did.)

The three Husker players are QB Dylan Raiola, TE Carter Nelson and OL Preston Taumua. The game wasn't that spectacular (all-star games seldom are). But the night was an infomercial for the University of Nebraska and the Husker football program. The announcers kept plugging Nebraska and Dylan Raiola. There was even a sideline interview during the game with Dylan and his father, former Husker great Dominic. Great pub for the Huskers!

As expected, Dylan played well. What impressed me the most about his play was that he let the game come to him. He didn't force anything. His throwing accuracy is a given and so is his leadership. Husker fans will be in store for a much improved Husker offense come this fall.

Prince update

Saturday night, I got a chance to see part of the 13-0 Class B Elkhorn North Wolves take on the 10-4 Class A Millard North Mustangs. The game was played on a neutral court on the Creighton University campus. Husker women's basketball '24 commit Britt Prince starred for the Wolves. Elkhorn North eked out a 66-63 win. Prince, who was double and even triple teamed all night, still managed to score 19 points and register 11 assists.

How good are the Wolves? A few days before they met the Mustangs, they beat Lincoln Northwest 90-12.

How 'Bout Them Huskers

In this week's podcast, grandson Will and I talk about the domino effect created by Nick Saban's departure from Alabama. We also yak about Matt Rhule's hiring of Glenn Thomas as the new Husker QB coach and co-offensive coordinator. We also chat about the Polynesian Bowl and the Husker men's and women's basketball teams.
