Meant to be a Wildcat: 2022 CB Commit Braden Turner

An analysis and evaluation of the three-star Alabama native.

Braden Turner had his share of options when it came to deciding where he wanted to take his talents in 2022. He was offered by multiple schools including Wake Forest, Kentucky and Georgia State. Yet a week after making his only visit, he was ready to officially commit to Northwestern.

In Turner Northwestern is getting a 5’11", 165-pound three-star cornerback who has showcased elite hands and quickness at the high school level. Last season Turner tallied five interceptions and 40 tackles in McGill-Toolen’s 10 games. He recorded a punt return touchdown in their final game of the season, a loss in the first round of the playoffs. Should everything go to plan, Turner will be reuniting with his former high school teammate Jamal Mosley when he joins NU in 2022.

Below are Turner’s highlights from his junior season along with an analysis of his strengths and weaknesses.

Analysis:

Turner is a three-star cornerback with pretty impressive hands. He has an innate feel for where the quarterback is looking to pass the ball and is easily able to get his hands in the opposition’s catching window to muck things up. When the ball isn’t thrown in his direction he’s also more than capable of tracking down the player with the ball, breaking through a few blocks and getting the tackle.

Turner’s shown the ability to make some pretty difficult interception catches, sometimes jumping off one foot and catching it with one hand (see video). Turner is able to make plays after his picks thanks to his speed and ability to create separation with his assortment of hesitations and changes of speed. He uses those skills while returning the ball off punts which has led to a few highlight long return runs. Overall, Turner is an exciting prospect that has all the tools to be a quality player at the next level.
