Analysis and Evaluation of 2022 DB Commit Trevon Howard

Northwestern secured a top safety with a huge upside.

On June 25, three-star safety Trevon Howard announced his commitment to Northwestern.

Howard chose to join the Wildcats over other Power 5 schools including Oregon State, NC State, Minnesota, Michigan State, Michigan, Louisville, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa State, Colorado and Arizona.

Howard started his high school career at the Minehaha Academy located in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he won a state title in 2018. In 2020 he transferred to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he helped lead his team to the national championship. 247 sports has Howard ranked as the No. 32 safety in his class.

As part of his announcement, Howard wrote a first-person story in Florida Today where he explained his decision to commit to Northwestern, saying, “Northwestern is one of the top university’s in the nation and academics are a priority for me. Academics combined with an extremely talented football program is a dream come true for me.”

Below are Howard’s highlights from his junior season along with an analysis of his strengths and weaknesses.

Analysis:

The root of Howard’s game is his ability to read what’s happening on the field from the back line of the defense. He stands back in space, reads the quarterback’s eyes, where receivers are on the field and then reacts accordingly. This sometimes leads to a pick, but perhaps more importantly it informs where he positions himself for a tackle after the catch. He is able to read where the receiver wants to go with the ball before he even catches it and then avoid any incoming blockers with ease on his way to perfectly positioning himself to make the tackle.

On top of his ability to read the game, he has the physical tools to be a major threat on the defensive side. He has the quickness and agility to recover and cover for any defensive mistakes that are made in front of him. That quickness also makes him a threat to return the ball off of interceptions.

Overall, Howard is a great addition with huge upside. He has all the tools to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond.
