Chris Spielman Evaluates Dwayne Haskins Redskins' Debut

Former Ohio State QB Struggles, May Start This Week Against New England

Dwayne Haskins' debut in relief with the Washington Redskins on Sunday didn't look much like his rescue of Ohio State at Michigan in the final game of the regular season in 2017.

While Haskins came off the bench that day in Ann Arbor for an injured J.T. Barrett and rallied OSU from behind, he was unable to do that Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J., playing in relief of Case Keenum for the Washington Redskins.

Down 14-0 when he entered, Haskins led Washington to a field goal on his first series, but thereafter was intercepted three times in a 9-of-17, 107-yard performance.

NFL analyst Chris Spielman had the game on Fox and offered this assessment:

"(His mobility) is the thing that surprised me," Spielman said. "That first run that he had, where he saw the green and took the green. "It's not fair to give him an assessment (overall). I can't.

"OK, you don't get an reps (in practice), or very few reps...That's not going to prepare you to play a game and have your first NFL experience. Disregard preseason. That's all vanilla. You can't assess and grade this guy off that performance, because you didn't give him a chance to succeed."

Spielman cited the Redskins missing six starters on offense as a mitigating factor in Haskins' struggles.

Washington selected Haskins 15th overall after a lone season as Ohio State's starter in which he threw for 50 touchdowns.

Despite the interceptions, Haskins did not seem discouraged.

Whatever it takes to win, we will do that,” Haskins said. “I don’t like losing. I’ve never lost. I don’t like losing. We’re going to change that.”

One of Haskins interceptions went to former Michigan Wolverine Jabril Peppers, who took it back for a touchdown.

Haskins was disappointed on draft night not to be taken by the Giants, the team he grew up rooting for. Instead, New York took Daniel Jones of Duke with the sixth overall pick.

Jones is now 2-0 with the Giants, supplanting Eli Manning as the starter.

Haskins made a point to speak with the two-time Super Bowl MVP after the game.

"I grew up here and lived an hour away from the stadium,” Haskins said. (New) Jersey still runs deep in my blood.

“I have no hate towards the Giants. Like I said, I’m from here. So now, if anything, it’s more motivation to beat them every year. I’m looking forward to that.”
