I'll be posting my live reactions to Ohio State-Michigan State here. Would love to interact with you. Go to si.com/college/ohiostate and sound off in the comment section and share your reactions and observations with our staff, subscribers and fellow members of the SI.com Ohio State community.
That's about three different replays of Michael Geiger kicking that winning field goal in 2015. OSU fans see that dude windmilling into their nightmares every time they think of Sparty.
What's the over-under on sourpuss Mark Dantonio sideline frowny faces tonight?
Wow, you don't see Fields miss those very often. Thought that might go for big yardage once he avoided MSU rush.
Welp, that's the danger of Fields making so much happen in OSU's first five games. He's held onto it too long a few times and gotten away with it. Not that time, though.
That's what MSU needs to happen...to OSU. Turnovers. Buckeyes set up at the MSU 27. Did I miss a Dino Frowny Face shot?
Odd call there...running it in third-and-long. Haubeil channels his inner Florida State Seminole from the Bobby Bowden era and goes Wide Right. So, OSU gets out of danger from the bad Fields' sack and Sparty survive's Cody White's fumble. Nervous Buckeye fans flashing back to 2015. Aaron Rodgers says, R-E-L-A-X.
Michigan State botches the option pitch and OSU recovers at the MSU 22. Two second-down turnovers for Sparty.
Michigan State's coverage is unreal. Fields had all day and no where to go. Another Haubeil field goal attempt, this one from 39 yards, is good. Michigan State probably feels like it won the lottery, with two turnovers inside the 40 and only three points on the board for OSU.
There's one of those Pickerington kids who Dantonio nabbed off their state title team of two years ago, Trent Gillison with the catch on third down
Two first downs for MSU before OSU forces a punt. Dantonio probably OK with that. Changed field position a bit and gave his defense a rest. That didn't happen much last year in Lansing.
Looks like officials had their choice there. Holding on Jonah Jackson or Chris Olave on the edge. Negates Dobbins for 33.
Fields doesn't look comfortable yet.
Missed opportunity there. Victor's hands betrayed him. Buckeyes will punt after Sparty holds on third down. Nothing there for Fields.
Feels like Ohio State is going to break a big play at some point. Don's see how MSU can hold that up all night. Maybe Sparty induces Fields into a big mistake and gets field position out of it. That's probably what MSU needs to score. But so far, it does have a 2015 feel. Long way to go, though.
The, Mike Tressel, Herbie keeps talking about is Jim Tressel's nephew. Mike is the son of Dick Tressel, who was OSU's running backs coach during the Tressel era.
If Thayer Munford can't go back in at left tackle, expect Josh Alabi to fill in. He was player-of-the-game at Nebraska filling in for Branden Bowen at right tackle. Alabi fifth-year senior, so lots of experience.
Michigan State hoped to do just this...weather the first quarter, punch-counterpunch, make a few first downs and let its defense gain confidence. I thought OSU would have too many weapons for Sparty to stop them all, and still think that will be the case. But, Dantonio is a master at playing this sort of game. It's a good test for OSU and a good test for Ryan Day, because Saban and Dabo are in another league, and that's who you have to beat to win it all.
Munford back in at left tackle.
Nice concept....fake the zone read and get it to Victor in the open. He goes the distance, although this one will get replayed.
Is that a live ball in the end zone, or was Victor's hand down and thus the play dead?
Ruling stands..which means they have no clue what to call, because, of course, they are Big Ten officials.
Well, a three-and-out would have been useful after OSU took a 10-0 lead, but that's not going to happen after Elijah Collins goes for 33 and Lewerke hits the TE to get into the Red Zone.
Whoa, that's a blow to OSU's solar plexis...5-plays, 75-yards and Lewerke hits Darrell Stewart for the TD against Jeff Okudah. Big-time drive in response from Sparty.
Justin Fields is starting to settle down. Makes a nice scramble decision to convert a third-and-4. Spartans missing some tackles they cannot afford.
Garrett Wilson with the universal symbol for, "Please don't call holding on me," by holding up his hands in a, Not me, motion. Moves the ball outside the 20 instead of inside the 5. So, Fields just hits Luke Farrell for the TD. Now it's about to be 17-7 Ohio State.
Michigan State sets up at its 45 after unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on kickoff, but Chase Young cleans up for Malik Harrison and now Sparty faces third-and-13. Huge conversion to keep the ball. A punt there felt like 24-7 OSU was in the offing.
If Lewerke had played anywhere close to this well last year, Dantonio would have another win over OSU on his resume.
Spoke too soon on Lewerke, because he just had Cody White for a TD, but overthrew him. Big mistake for MSU, but it gets three points out of it on a 34-yard field goal that narrows things to 17-10 with 3:36 left in the half.
J.K. Dobbins finds a seam on third-and-2 and goes the distance from 67 yards. Looked like Spartan DB went for the fumble-punch at about the 20 instead of the tackle. He'll have some 'splainin' to do for that one.
