'Never Crossed My Mind': Buckeyes QB Devin Brown Staying Put at Ohio State

The NCAA transfer portal is once again open and is already filling up with some high-profile players.

Ideally, the Ohio State Buckeyes would have loved to see both quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown take reps in their annual Scarlet vs. Gray spring game. But a finger injury that required a procedure took that opportunity away from them as Brown was forced to watch from the sidelines.

Does that mean McCord now has a leg up in the competition to win the starting role?

No, not necessarily, at least not any more than he might've had heading into the final scrimmage of the spring. Yet, despite the Buckeyes offense getting off to a slow start, not scoring a touchdown until 1:45 was left in the first half as Chip Trayanum blitzed the defense for a 65-yard score if McCord is the frontrunner, will that make Brown want to enter the NCAA transfer portal?

"No, that's never crossed my mind," Brown said post-game about transferring. "I've always been a guy that's gonna stick to my word and stick to where I'm at."

In today's day and age of college football, many who have been in a similar situation to Brown, a once heavily recruited prospect out of high school, have jumped into the portal if they looked unlikely to win a starting job.

Obviously, things can change down the road, but at least for now, Brown seems determined to stick out in Columbus and potentially even wait his turn like McCord has if he cannot win the role this offseason.

But that response from Brown also further indicates the culture that head coach Ryan Day has instilled in the quarterback room. Brown and McCord weren't the first highly recruited prospects to wait behind a starter.

C.J. Stroud was the No. 2 signal-caller in the nation's 2020 recruiting class and waited a year behind Justin Fields. In his own right, McCord was a five-star recruit and proceeded to wait behind Stroud.
