Buckeyes Coach Corey Dennis Says 'Guys Gravitate Towards' QB Devin Brown

Corey Dennis says Brown has already begun to develop himself into a mobile option in the pocket.

The "next man up" mentality is not uncommon to Ohio State football and will be on full display this offseason as the Buckeyes look for a new starting quarterback to replace C.J. Stroud.

Senior Kyle McCord is the betting favorite to take the role for many Buckeye fans due to his age and experience, having backed up Stroud all of last season. However, there are still plenty of other talented options if Ohio State decides to promote in-house, one of whom is freshman Devin Brown

Quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis commended Brown during media availability on Wednesday, saying he has already been able to unite members of the team, and like the others at the position, will benefit from having more snaps under his belt.

"He's an athletic kid, great personality," Dennis said. "Guys do gravitate towards him, but it'll be fun to see when these guys get more reps and that's what we're excited about in this spring."

Dennis said the speed and mobility of Brown is what sets him apart from other QBs in the room.

"He's athletic, he's mobile, he can extend plays a little bit," Dennis said. "I'm not saying that Kyle (McCord) can't do those things, but I would say that that's something that Devin, it's kind of his niche."

Brown played a handful of snaps during Ohio State's 77-21 win against Toledo on September 17. While these can technically count as regular-season experience for the young signal caller, they were all handoffs to running backs, thus amounting to nothing on the stat sheet.

At the end of the day however, the decision on who will be the next starting quarterback is a matter of what you have to offer the team in the future rather than what you've done in the past, according to Dennis.

"There definitely is a blank slate," Dennis said. "I think that just the difference is the guys kind of know what areas that they want to work on, they want to improve on, and they want to go on."
