C.J. Stroud: Buckeyes Kyle McCord is 'Ready' for Starting QB Job

As the Ohio State Buckeyes are set to partake in their final scrimmage of fall camp, C.J. Stroud recently gave his evaluations of both Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.

Whoever the starting quarterback is for the Ohio State Buckeyes for their Week 1 matchup on the road against Indiana will have the tall task of not only filling the shoes of C.J. Stroud but also continuing the streak of NFL-caliber play that the team has had in recent years under coach Ryan Day.

The coaching staff and current players aside, there may not be a better source to gauge the readiness of both quarterbacks competing for the job this fall than current Houston Texans' signal-caller Stroud.

“I think he's definitely ready,” Stroud said of Kyle McCord in a recent interview with The Columbus Dispatch. “He's very accurate, very smart, mobile in the pocket, can make every throw on the field…I'm super, super happy for him, and I know, if he gets his opportunity, he's going to take full advantage."

Buckeye fans had the opportunity to see what McCord would look like with the starting offense as he played in the annual Scarlet and Gray spring game. And while McCord's final stat line of 18 for 34 passing for 184 yards and one touchdown doesn't jump off the stat sheet, that can partially be blamed on a limited receivers group and spotty offensive line play.

Even with the performance from McCord in the spring game, which drew mixed reviews from the fanbase, he is still seen as the favorite to win the job as he competes with Devin Brown, who Stroud also thinks can play the position at a high level.

“Devin, being a young guy — he was my roommate last year in camp and during the season — I definitely think he was groomed to be a great quarterback not only in college, but in the NFL as well, ..." Stroud said of Brown. "I know (Ohio State football) coach [Ryan Day] is coaching Devin hard.”

Brown, a sophomore and former four-star recruit, didn't play in the spring game due to a finger injury, which makes him the unknown to many outside of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

With the Buckeyes scheduled for their final scrimmage of the fall, Day did mention the possibility of naming his starting quarterback in the coming week, despite still being two weeks away from the season opener.
