Could Buckeyes Use Dual-QB System vs. Indiana?

The Ohio State Buckeyes still have not decided on a starting quarterback. What could that mean for the season-opener?

With 13 days until kick-off of the regular season, the Ohio State Buckeyes still have a major unknown at the quarterback position. Following the team's last scrimmage of fall camp, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day told the media on Monday that nothing has changed in the quarterback battle.

"Both graded out [like] champions in the last scrimmage," Day said. "Both have gotten better, but to this point right now, as honestly as I could say it, there is not one that's won the job. There's not one that lost the job. ...

"I asked the staff this weekend after the scrimmage, I just took a straw poll, and it was almost split right down the middle."

This latest update from Day comes after he said at Big Ten Media Days that junior Kyle McCord had an "edge" over the younger Devin Brown due to his extra year in the system. Yet, by all indications, Brown has closed that initial "gap" going into fall camp and now begs the question of what the Buckeyes' plans are for the season-opener versus Indiana.

With fall camp mostly out of the way, as the Buckeyes will begin preparation for the Hoosiers, they will have the next two weeks to decide who will be the starting quarterback. Although they also could use the dual-quarterback system until they find their guy.

While the dual-quarterback system may be an unpopular choice as it doesn't boast a good track record long-term, as teams would much rather have their starter decided to head into the opener, it'd give Day and co. another tool for evaluation.

Michigan used it last season, giving J.J. McCarthy and now Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara a chance to start in their opening two games before choosing the latter.

The Buckeyes could follow that same formula of allowing McCord and Brown to start in their first two games or let each play a half against Indiana.

"I think our staff feels confident with both of them, which is exciting," Day said. "I think this is two good players getting after it. I think they are making each other better. We've got them more reps than anybody else in the camps that I've been here."
