The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Michigan Wolverines found themselves in similar positions this offseason. Both basketball programs parted ways with their head coach, launching national searches. With this, Florida Atlantic's Dusty May was among the best candidates to land a high-level job.

Of course, the Cowboys were unable to hire May, as he took the head coaching position at Michigan. Instead, they hired Western Kentucky's Steve Lutz.

With May taking over at Michigan this offseason, he's building his staff out in preparation to build out a roster for his first season with the program. One coach he's targeting to join as an assistant coach is former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton Jr., who the program just moved on from.

Evidently, this would be a huge, huge addition for May. While Boynton could never put together an incredible on-court product -- with one NCAA Tournament appearance during his tenure -- he's proven to be an incredible recruiter.

Boynton landed Cade Cunningham in the 2020 recruiting class -- the nation's top recruit and eventual No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Just this past offseason, his incoming class of recruits ranked top-20 in the nation.

Coaching alongside May could benefit Michigan in a huge way. May has proven to be able to put together the on-court product while Boynton is going to help May land the talent to compete at the highest level.

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports reports that Boynton is soon expected to join May's staff at Michigan.

"Former Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton Jr. is soon expected to join Dusty May's staff at Michigan as an assistant," Norlander reports. "Boynton has other options at the high-major level, but May has put a high priority on Boynton in Year 1 in Ann Arbor."

It's interesting to see Boynton receiving other high-major interests, but joining Michigan's staff with the transfer portal makes plenty of sense. He can work with May to secure a makeover of a roster ahead of the next basketball season.
