Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo Tells Crazy Matt Corral vs. Rich Rodriguez Story

How did Ole Miss' final drive of the 2019 Egg Bowl transpire? Jonathan Mingo revealed some details at the Rebels' Pro Day on Wednesday.

OXFORD, Miss. -- It's no secret that the 2019 Ole Miss Rebels hit the bottom of the barrel in the SEC, but just how wild things had gotten had often been purely speculation.

That is, until Jonathan Mingo spoke with the media on Wednesday after Ole Miss' annual Pro Day.

Mingo has hopes of joining an NFL roster this spring, and towards the end of his media availability, he was asked to describe what he will miss most about playing at Ole Miss.

The wide receiver drew some laughs when he referenced Elijah Moore's infamous celebration in the end zone against Mississippi State in 2019 that helped cost the Rebels the game, but it was after that when he began to describe quarterback Matt Corral and offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez facing off on the final drive.

"I still think my favorite game was when Elijah p***** on the field," Mingo said with a laugh. "That game was fun.

"It was watching Matt take over the offense. John Rhys had the offense back then, and Rich Rod would tell him to call all those plays, and Matt was like, 'I'm not calling those plays at all,' and he drove us all the way down the field."

Mingo was later asked for clarification on if Corral had simply called the routes of wide receivers Braylon Sanders (converting a long first down) and Elijah Moore (scoring a touchdown), but he quickly put that to rest.

"He called the whole drive," Mingo said. "Rich Rod would be like, 'Call this play.' Coach [Jacob] Peeler was like, 'Elijah, Braylon, go run your route.' Matt was like, 'Don't listen to them. I'm calling this right here.'"

If not for Moore's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after scoring the touchdown, Corral's decision to take the keys of the offense would have paid off. Even so, it gave one of the Rebels' best receivers a strong and humorous memory to take with him to the pros.

That game also, of course, ushered out the Matt Luke era in Oxford and brought in Lane Kiffin, and the rest of Corral and Mingo's story arc is history.
