Luke Ferrelli Is Emerging as Ole Miss' Next Star LB

After losing linebacker depth this past season, Ole Miss had a real hole at linebacker opposite Suntarine Perkins and Keaton Thomas.

Since spring ball picked up, Luke Ferrelli has been the answer. Ferrelli is a proven ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and will emerge as more than just a depth piece.

Ferrelli will be a great addition to an already stacked Rebels defense, even though his path to Oxford has been controversial.

In his first season as a starter, Luke Ferrelli made a statement to the ACC and the nation that he's one of the most promising young linebackers.

In 2025, Ferrelli captured 91 tackles (tied for 10th in the ACC), 5 tackles for loss, a sack, an interception, and a pass breakup in a rookie campaign for the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Over the 13 games Cal played, Ferrelli showed himself as an explosive, high-motor linebacker.

Possessing elite speed and agility, Ferrelli is able to track down ball-carriers to disrupt runs and screens a lot more easily. With excellent football IQ, Ferrelli diagnoses plays quickly and sniffs out routes before opposing offenses have time to blink. His fluid hips allow him to move smoothly enough to drop deep into zone coverage or cover a tight end or running back.

After committing to Clemson first in the transfer portal cycle, he then flipped to Ole Miss in the final hour of the window. Clemson's Dabo Swinney was very unhappy with this move, filing tampering accusations against Pete Golding and company that remain an open NCA inquiry.

But the Rebels might be a better fit for Luke Ferrelli with how Pete Golding runs his defenses. Aggressive and downhill linebackers are a perfect match for Golding's defense; Ferrelli's elite closing speed and instincts are a natural match for that scheme.

Despite all the controversy and noise, Luke Ferrelli has shown out since arriving in the spring.

What Camp Has Shown So Far

Since landing in Oxford this spring, Luke Ferrelli has been on a roll with his new team.

The coaching staff already trusts him, with Ferrelli receiving the green dot (the on-field defensive play-caller designation). Not only is it an honor to receive the green dot, but with someone as young as Luke Ferrelli and new to a program, it makes it that much rarer.

Ferrelli will fit right into Ole Miss' defense; Keaton Thomas' coverage ability will allow him to play to his strengths as a downhill linebacker.

With spring and camp reports being consistently positive, media outlets have labeled Ferrelli as a candidate to be a breakout defensive story.

Although Ferrelli had a great year, he's yet to play SEC competition in a game. Offseason training camp and September will be his first looks against SEC opponents.
