Minnesota Running Back Transfers to Penn State

Trey Potts, a Williamsport native, joins the Nittany Lions' gifted backfield.

Penn State boosted its offense with Big Ten experience, as former Minnesota running back Trey Potts announced his transfer to the Nittany Lions.

Potts made his decision public Wednesday on social media.

Potts, who is from Williamsport, becomes the oldest running back on scholarship at Penn State. The senior spent four seasons at Minnesota, where he rushed for 1,195 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Potts carried 101 times for 471 yards and three touchdowns behind starter Mohamed Ibrahim last season. He averaged 5 yards per carry in his career.

At Williamsport High, Potts rushed for 3,490 yards and 59 touchdowns despite multiple injuries during his junior and senior years. He was a 3-star recruit who made several unofficial visits to Penn State but ultimately chose Minnesota.

Potts (5-11, 210 pounds) enters a unique situation at Penn State, where he will be the veteran in a young room. The Lions return the Big Ten's top backfield duo in Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, whose emergence last season led three running backs to transfer from the program.

The Lions also will bring in two freshman backs in the 2023 recruiting class. London Montgomery and Cam Wallace will enroll this summer.

Potts entered the NCAA Transfer Portal in March.
