Penn State Faces Michigan for a Trip to the Frozen Four

The Lions get another shot at the Big Ten Tournament champ Sunday in Allentown.

Penn State drew one step closer to the Frozen Four after an historic victory in the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship. Now the Lions get another shot at Michigan with their first Frozen Four bid at stake.

Penn State will face third-ranked Michigan on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The winner heads to next week's Frozen Four in Tampa. Here's the rundown.

About the Lions: Penn State routed Michigan Tech 8-0 in Friday's first round, marking (briefly) the largest margin of victory in NCAA Tournament history. Eight different players scored goals, eight had multi-point games and 15 recorded a point. The game marked Penn State's rousing return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018. Now, the Lions get another crack at Michigan, against which they're 1-3 this season. Penn State defeated Michigan 3-0 in November when the Wolverines were ranked No. 1.Penn State has scored the first goal in 26 times this season. The team is 18-7-1 when scoring first.

About the Wolverines: Michigan quickly upstaged Penn State's record, defeating Colgate 11-1 in Friday's second game at PPL Center. The Allentown region's top seed, Michigan scored seven goals in the second period to accelerate the rout. The Wolverines won their second straight Big Ten Tournament title and third overall with a come-from-behind, 4-3 win over top-seeded Minnesota in the championship game. Michigan is the Big Ten's highest-scoring team (167 goals) and has three of the conference's top eight scorers. Adam Fantilli leads the nation with 28 goals and 63 points.
