Penn State wrestling freshman Jayden James was less seconds from his second age-group world title Sunday in Slovakia. What happened next will be a lesson he brings to the Nittany Lions' room this season.

James earned a silver medal at the 2026 U20 World Wrestling Championships after losing a thrilling 13-12 decision to Ariya Yoshida in the 74 kg men's freestyle final. James advanced to the gold-medal final in Bratislava with four wins in Saturday's preliminary rounds, including a 7-5 decision over Italy's Alessio Perentin, with whom he wrestled at the Delbarton School in New Jersey.

Those wins set the stage for Sunday's final against Yoshida, which was among the best of the U20 tournament. James scored two takedowns early in the first period to take a 4-0 lead and command of the match. Yoshida responded by cutting James' lead to 6-4 at the break.

James opened the second period with a takedown to take an 8-4 lead, which Yoshida countered by scoring five unanswered points. From there, the wrestlers dueled until the final seconds.

James hit a four-point move to reclaim an 11-9 lead and led 12-9 with 30 seconds left. But Yoshida pulled off the win by scoring consecutive takedowns, the last in the match's waning seconds. James appeared to dodge Yoshida's very late shot but was turned with barely any time left on the clock.

James, who won a U17 title last year, added to Penn State's five-year run of medals at the U20 World Championships. Penn State wrestlers have scored five golds, five silvers and five bronze medals at U20 worlds since 2022.

James is the top recruit of Penn State's 2026 recruiting class and will compete right away for a spot in the Nittany Lions' lineup. He joins the Penn State wrestling program after going 79-0 and winning two New Jersey state titles over the past two seasons at Delbarton High.

James won the prestigious Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for 2026 after going 36-0 last season. He won his five bouts in the 165-pound weight class at the state tournament by pin or technical fall.

Originally committed to Virginia Tech, James flipped to join Cael Sanderson's roster in 2025. He won the could compete right away for a spot in Penn State's lineup at either 157 or 174 pounds.

James arrives at Penn State fresh off a superb freestyle season. Not long after graduating from Delbarton, James made the final of the U.S. Senior World Team Trials at 74 kg, ultimately falling to two-time NCAA champion David Carr. But in the process, James also defeated two-time NCAA finalist Mikey Caliendo of Iowa and future Penn State teammate Joe Sealey.

James joins a loaded Penn State roster that starts the season with an 86-match win streak and seeks to win its sixth consecutive team title at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Sanderson enters his 18th season with the NIttany Lions seeking his 14th overall title.
