Former Pitt Assistant Takes New Job at Boston College

A former Pitt Panthers player and assistant coach is headed back to the college game.

PITTSBURGH -- Former Pitt Panthers player and assistant coach Tim Lewis is taking a new job, returning to college football for the first time since a stint in Pittsburgh during the 1990s.

Lewis, a former standout kick returner and defensive back on some star-studded Pitt teams in the late 1970s and early 1980s, will join new head coach Bill O'Brien's staff at Boston College, according to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Lewis played with the likes of Dan Marino, Mark May, Jimbo Covert and other legendary former Panthers during the program's heyday. He picked off four passes and amassed 679 yards on kick returns during his career. Lewis was drafted 11th overall in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He starred for them before a neck injury cut his career short.

So Lewis then turned to coaching. He started in the college ranks as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M before moving on tot take better jobs at Pitt and SMU. He made the leap to the NFL in 1999, taking a defensive backs coach job with the Pittsburgh Steelers and eventually working his way up to defensive coordinator before leaving in 2003. He has prior NFL experience with the Giants, Panthers, Seahawks, Falcons and 49ers in addition to coaching experience in the XFL.

Now he's back in the college game and will face his former school this season, when the Panthers visit Boston College in Week 12.
