Pitt Transfer Target Joins ACC Rival

The Pitt Panthers lost a transfer target to Virginia Tech.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers lost a transfer linebacker they had been recruiting to a rival from the ACC.

Sam Brumfield, a coveted linebacker transfer from Middle Tennessee State, announced on Twitter that he would not attend Pitt next year and had decided to join Virginia Tech  in 2024 instead.

The Panthers aren't slated to face Virginia Tech for another two seasons, so they might not have to play Brumfield at all before he leaves school entirely.

Over 12 games, 10 of which were starts, Brumfield totaled a team-high 81 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a team-best eight quarterback hurries. He transferred to MTSU after a successful tenure at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Brumfield picked the Hokies over offers from Baylor, Ole Miss, Wake Forest, Cal, Memphis, Arizona State and others, in addition to Pitt, of course.

Brumfield's decision to spurn the Panthers was likely tied to some good news they've gotten recently. Eight days ago, senior middle linebacker Brandon George announced that he would be back for another season in blue and gold and standout freshman Jordan Bass did the same two days later.
