OBSERVATIONS: Gamecock Baseball's 3rd Preseason Scrimmage

South Carolinas Baseball program had another scrimmage this Sunday and we discuss some takeaways and notes from it.

It was a cold and windy day today for the final scrimmage of the weekend for Mark Kingston and his crew. The scrimmage ended with a score of 6-6 after team Garnet was up 4-0 at one point. It was a shaky day for the pitching staff, with 13 total free passes being given up via either a hit-by-pitch or walk compared to nine strikeouts today. They were able to make some big-time pitches as well but were up and down today as a whole.

Team Black and Team Garnet both had few hits. Team Garnet was led by Carson Hornung, who got the hitting started with an RBI single, bringing in Will Tippet, Parker Noland, and Talmadge LeCroy, who were all walked/ or hit by pitch. Tyler Causey hit a missile to right field with an exit velocity of 111 mph in a solo home run, and both Dalton Reeves and Evan Stone also got one in.

Cole Messina led Team Black at the plate, had a sac fly after a walk, and a passed ball, scoring two for team black. Messina also stole second after being walked and would go on to score after an RBI single from Jordan Carrion. Two other runs came in coming off an error by pitcher Jackson Phipps on the throw to third and by Tyler Causey at first.

Overall, the Garnet team burned themselves in a couple of instances, and the walk totals were a bit high, but they would only put a little weight on that after their first couple of spring scrimmages. They will be back at it again next weekend, and we will start to see who will separate themselves to get into the final lineup before Opening Day on February 16th. Designated Hitter, Left field, and Center field are three positions that I believe are still up for grabs.
