Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks took the court Sunday in their second-round game against the North Carolina Tar Heels, looking to Advance to the Sweet 16 in Albany, New York. With Kamilla Cardoso able to rejoin the team after her one-game suspension and Bree Hall returning after being held out of round one due to precautionary reasons, South Carolina was at full strength for this round two matchup. The Gamecocks would get off to a quick start and wouldn't look back in a dominating 88-41 win over North Carolina.

The Gamecocks started the game a bit sluggish, with three turnovers inside the first couple of minutes, but when they got out of their way, they were on fire! Tessa Johnson came off the bench and ignited a spark in the first quarter with back-to-back threes, which was part of a 17-2 run to end the first quarter. MiLaysia Fulwiley added her energy with a block and a three of her own at the other end before finishing the half with a steal and an assist.

The second quarter was no different than the first for South Carolina. They started the quarter on an 11-0 run and just continued to dominate the Tar Heels. They would continue to dominate the entirety of the quarter with a barrage of threes, and as a team, the Gamecocks went 5-6 in the second quarter.

South Carolina has had much better performances in the third quarter than today, but Fulwiley would end the quarter with five points sparking some momentum heading into the final quarter with a 36-point lead over the Tar Heels. The Gamecocks would put it on cruise control in the fourth quarter maintaining their lead throughout the remainder of the game.

In a game where five Gamecocks scored in double digits, MiLaysia Fulwiley led the way again with a game-high 20 points. Head Coach Dawn Staley and staff will now look forward to their Sweet 16 matchup, where they will face the winner of Oklahoma and Indiana, who play Sunday night.
