Chris Bell Returning to Syracuse Basketball For 2023-24 Season

The Orange’s starting forward announced he will be back.

Syracuse forward Chris Bell will return to the Orange for the 2023-24 basketball season, he announced on his Instagram page Thursday. Bell started 30 games for SU during his true freshman season, averaging 6.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game. He shot 40.2% from the floor and 34.5% from beyond the arc.

The news is another positive offseason development for head coach Adrian Autry, as Benny Williams is also returning to the Orange. In addition, Autry was landed guard JJ Starling, who many consider the top player in the transfer portal, while also adding George Washington assistant Brenden Straughn to his staff.

Bell signed with Syracuse as part of its 2023 recruiting class that featured six players in total. Bell came in as a top 100 player who was known as a shooter and scorer in high school. He picked SU over Rutgers, Washington, Florida State, Creighton, Iowa State, Maryland, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, San Diego State, Seton Hall, South Carolina, USC and others.

With the retention of Bell and Williams along with the departure of Joe Girard, there are two more decisions left which will impact the 2023-24 roster. The first is star point guard Judah Mintz, who has entered the NBA Draft process but has retained his eligibility. He can either return to the Orange or stay in the Draft. The second is star center Jesse Edwards, who has not made an announcement of any kind yet. He could either return for his final season of eligibility or turn pro.
