Syracuse enters the 2022-23 season after the program underwent a tremendous amount of change in the offseason. After moving on from longtime head coach Quentin Hillsman, Syracuse hired alum Felisha Legette-Jack to return the program to prominence. Legette-Jack is one of the all-time great players in Syracuse women's basketball history and an accomplished, experienced head coach. She turned Buffalo into a MAC power and a regular NCAA Tournament team that gave high major programs a lot of trouble. In addition to the change in coaching staff, the roster turned over quite a bit as well. Several players left the program due to the change while Legette-Jack brought in several transfers to replace them including a few from her former program at Buffalo. Despite battling through injuries and significant roster turnover, Legette-Jack made history. She became the first head coach of the Orange women's basketball team to make the postseason in her first year.

Columbia has been very good all season, even notching an ACC win (Miami) earlier this season. The Lions have high major wins over Memphis, Seton Hall and Miami. Columbia went 12-2 in Ivy League play, tying with Princeton for the regular season title. In the Ivy League Tournament, Harvard upset the Lions in the semifinals. Columbia has advanced in the WNIT with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Fordham, and has only lost twice at home all season (Vanderbilt, Princeton). Junior guard Abbey Hsu leads Columbia with 17.8 points per game. Senior guard Kaitlyn Davis leads the team in rebounds at 8.2 per game to go along with her 13.2 points. Columbia is a good outside shooting team at nearly 36%, but lacks size as its tallest player is 6-1 Hannah Pratt (starting center) and plays four guards around her.
