Syracuse Synopsis: The Week That Was & Looking Ahead

Recapping everything Syracuse Athletics and what to look forward to for the week ahead.

What better way to ring in 2024 than with a new content idea? Instead of having to click on a bunch of different articles in an attempt to know the pulse of each program, I decided to create a one-stop shop for everything going on in Syracuse Athletics!

You can expect these articles every Monday highlighting what happened from the previous week and previewing what’s coming up. Let’s get it started!

Women’s Basketball:

Record: 16-2 (6-1 in ACC) No. 22 in AP Poll & No. 25 in Coaches Poll

Last Week: (1/18 vs No. 15 FSU W, 79-73 & 1/21 @ Pitt W, 72-59)

This Week: 1/25 @ No. 15 Notre Dame (7 p.m.) & 1/28 vs No. 19 Virginia Tech (noon)

Cuse find themselves in the Top 25 for the second time this season after a convincing week in ACC Play, receiving lots of national buzz in the process. The Orange have been receiving votes since they were bounced earlier this month, but have rattled off five straight since the loss to UNC on the road.

On Thursday, Syracuse trailed by 18 points in the second half against No. 15 Florida State and still managed to beat the Seminoles, 79-73. Dyaisha Fair hit a program-record nine threes in the comeback win for her first 30-point performance of the season. Following back-to-back home comebacks to remain unbeaten inside the Dome, Sunday was much easier for SU to defeat a winless Pitt team in conference play on the road, 72-59.

Now that Coach Felisha Leggette-Jack’s squad is back as a ranked team this week, it’s not going to be easy to stay there. This upcoming week is arguably the most challenging left on the schedule for Cuse as they’ll travel to South Bend to face Hannah Hidalgo and Notre Dame (14-3/5-2) on Thursday. Syracuse then hosts the reigning ACC Champ Virginia Tech Hokies (14-4/5-2) on Sunday at noon.

Men’s Basketball:

Record: 13-5 (4-3 in ACC)

Last Week: (1/16 @ Pitt W, 69-58 & 1/20 vs Miami W, 72-69)

This Week: 1/23 vs Florida State (7 p.m.) & 1/27 vs NC State (7 p.m.)

The Men’s basketball program also swept their two matchups to get back above .500 in ACC play. Cuse looked like a completely different team last Tuesday, shooting 10-18 from beyond the arc against the Panthers to sweep the season series over Pitt. Defense was the key, holding Blake Hinson to a low-shooting percentage and freshman phenom Carleton “Bub” Carrington scoreless.

The Loud House lived up to its name versus Miami on Saturday afternoon outlasting the Hurricanes in a back-and-forth battle. Five Cuse players finished in double-figures, including a masterclass performance from JJ Starling, who nailed a career-high six threes in the 22-point effort. Quadir Copeland played hero, connecting on the first SU buzzer-beater since the 2017 season.

The homestand continues for Syracuse into this week as they’ll host Florida State (11-7/5-2) at the JMA Wirless Dome at 7 p.m. before a primetime Saturday day bout with NC State (13-5/5-2).

Women’s Ice Hockey:

Record: 5-19-2 (2-9-1 in CHA)

Last Week: (1/16 @ No. 10 St. Lawrence L, 6-3 & 1/19-20 @ Penn State W, 3-1 / L, 5-0)

This Week: 1/26-27 vs Robert Morris (6:00 p.m.) & (3:00 p.m.)

Syracuse earned its first conference win since December 2 against the top team in the CHA, Penn State in Unviersity Park. Even though the Orange only had 13 shots in the entire game, special teams was the difference in the win. Defenseman Alexandria Weiss tallied a power-play goal in the first period before Darci Johal and Tatum White netted markers on the man advantage in the third.

Goaltender Allie Kelly recorded program-record 65 saves in the loss versus St. Lawrence while also stopping her 3,000th shot in her career. Kelly stopped 41 shots in between the pipes in the win over Penn State. SU now looks to ride the momentum into a weekend set with Robert Morris (9-15/6-6).

Women’s Tennis:

Record: 2-0

Last Week: (1/20 vs Army W, 7-0 & 1/21 vs Fordham W, 7-0)

This Week: 1/27 vs St. Bona (11 a.m.) & 1/28 vs Cornell (11 a.m.)
