Aggies Third Baseman Trevor Werner Selected By Kansas City Royals In MLB Draft

In this story:
Trevor Werner was known for his hot glove at third base and power-hitting persona at the plate during his time on the Texas A&M baseball team.
He might be hurling fastballs and getting batters to chase sliders if he makes it to the pros.
The Kansas City Royals selected Werner with the No. 199th pick in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB Draft Monday afternoon. According to reports from the Bryan-College Station Eagle, Werner is expected to forgo his final season of eligibility and head to Kansas City's farm system.
Werner was one of three Aggie baseball players selected during the second day of the draft Monday, joining shortstop Hunter Haas and right-handed pitcher Nathan Dettmer. Haas was selected No. 120 overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fourth round, while Dettmer was selected with the 139th pick by the Oakland Athletics.
While primarily serving as a third baseman during his four seasons at Blue Bell Park, Werner was announced on the draft broadcast as a two-way player. As a freshman in 2021 under then-coach Rob Childress, Werner pitched as a reliever, posting a 2-0 record with a 7.71 ERA in 9.1 innings. He struck out 11 batters in nine appearances.
Kansas City will have to decide if Werner's 90-plus MPH fastball can be enough to transform him into a pitcher at the next level, but he should serve as a corner infielder in the team's farm system. He was a catalyst in helping the Aggies reach the College World Series in Jim Schlossnagle's first season and remained a consistent hitter coming out of the No. 2 hole in the lineup.

In four seasons, Werner hit .251 with a .348 on-base percentage and .459 slugging percentage. He totaled 21 home runs, 97 RBIs, and 64 walks in 125 games played.
Werner's time in Aggieland was met with a myriad of roadblocks, including a global pandemic that shut down all college athletics in the spring of 2020. In 2022, the infielder missed 28 games after suffering a broken hand during the middle of the season.
In his final season with the Aggies, Werner hit .252 with 14 homers, 52 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in 57 games. He also was credited with a .961 fielding percentage and 95 assists against five errors.
A&M seemed to be prepared for Werner's departure, adding Fairfield third baseman and 2023 MAAC Player of the Year Charlie Pagliarini via the trasnfer portal this offseason. Last year with the Stags, Pagliarini finished with career-highs in home runs (21), RBIs (86), slugging percentage (.844), on-base percentage (.528), and total bases (162).
The senior infielder also ranked third nationally in RBIs, sixth in on-base percentage, and fourth in slugging.
