Aggies TE Max Wright Named To Wuerffel Trophy Preseason Watch List

Max Wright is garnering high praise among his peers entering the 2023 season.

Texas A&M's Max Wright could be picking up more than a few touchdowns in 2023 if all things go according to plan.

The senior tight end was named to the Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list as Texas A&M's representative, the Wuerffel Foundation announced Thursday morning. The Wuerffel Trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their impact and inspire greater service nationwide.

A native of Katy, Wright enters his final season with the Aggies after joining the program in 2018. Since arriving on campus, the defensive lineman-turn-tight end has played in 40 games, totaling 13 receptions for 194 yards and two touchdowns over the past three seasons. Wright has also been a focal point on A&M's special teams, working on kickoffs, kickoff returns, field goal attempts, and point after attempts.

Wright was the recipient of the Aggie Heart Award, which is presented to a senior who displays the intangibles such as effort, desire, determination, competitiveness, accountability, leadership and courage. Last season, he totaled a career-high nine catches for 129 yards and a touchdown.

“Max is phenomenal,” said A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said last season “A great leader, a great caring guy who understands the big picture of things … and guys respect him a lot because of how hard he works, the things he goes through and the way he goes about his business.

“He’s just an outstanding human being and player for us.”

The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 2, and finalists will be announced on Nov. 28.

The winner of the Wuerfell Award is expected to be named on Dec. 7 or Dec. 8 during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN. The award will be presented to the winner on Feb. 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Ga.

Texas A&M opens the season at Kyle Field at 6 p.m. against New Mexico on Sept. 2.
